How Often Should You Brush Your Teeth?

One of the basic ways to keep your oral hygiene in good condition is to brush your teeth and floss. These habits help remove any food residues stuck between the teeth that can form plaque and lead to more serious oral health problems like cavities.

How Many Times per Day Should You Brush Your Teeth?

The answer provided by the American Dental Association to this question is twice per day. As a general rule, you should brush your teeth for about 2 minutes and use fluoride toothpaste.

Apart from these general recommendations, it is advisable that you clean each tooth and pay extra attention to the areas closest to the gums.

These are the most likely places where food and plaque can hide and when you don’t brush them off, they can produce acids, attack your tooth enamel, and cause cavities or gum disease.

How to Make Sure You Brush Your Teeth Properly?

Set a Reminder

While it’s ok to forget brushing once in a while, doing so repeatedly can affect your dental health.

Setting a reminder can be a great way to make sure you don’t forget to brush your teeth.

Use the Proper Technique

For best results, hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle and move it back and forth or up and down on the teeth, focusing on the area where the teeth meet the gums.

Brush Depending on What Food You Eat

If you have eaten very acidic foods, you should not brush them immediately. These acids can weaken the tooth enamel and brushing your teeth too fast can affect the enamel further.

Choose the Right Toothbrush

Most people use a normal toothbrush, while others prefer electric toothbrushes. Electric toothbrushes are more advisable for people who suffer from arthritis or the ones who do not manage to properly clean their teeth using a regular toothbrush.

Other Tips

On top of brushing your teeth regularly and at the proper times, dentists also recommend that you include the below-mentioned habits in your daily routine to keep your oral health in good condition:

  • Use mouthwash after brushing and don’t forget to floss.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Limit the intake of sugary drinks as much as possible.
  • Regularly swap your toothbrush for a new one.
  • Schedule a visit with your dentist at least once a month for regular check-ups.
